Improving Your Memory For Exam Study

Improving your memory for studying exams is one the most popular requests for people wanting to improve their grades.

Studying for exams is time critical because the majority of people leave it to the last minute. Here is how you can improve your memory so that you can study effectively for exams.

1. Get Some Rest

If you don't have much time to revise for an exam, this may sound a little crazy to you. But you need to get as much sleep as you can when you study for an exam. Get enough rest so that you can concentrate when revising throughout the day.

When you are tired, you are basically wasting your time doing revision. The information won't stay in brain and you won't feel in the mood for revision. The majority of your time will be spent on resting, taking quick naps and reading materials but not remembering them.

Also, remember that when you are sleeping your brain gets to work reorganising what you learned throughout the day. If you don't get enough sleep, this isn't done correctly.

So get some sleep. You'll feel fresh and have enough energy to remember things and do your revision. Having two hours less sleep will cause you to lose much more than 2 hours revision time the next day. You just won't be up to it.

2. Understanding The Material

Your brain can only consume a certain amount of information at any one time. If you try to cram too much, you won't be able to remember the facts. One of the ways which you can put your memory to better use rather than trying to remember all those facts, is to understand the material.

Don't try and just remember the basic facts in each section of the books. Try to understand the material. Make up situations and think how you can apply what you have learned. This will make remembering the information a breeze.

This is because your brain is making sense of the information and this is also why a lot of people waste their revision time. They try to remember facts without understanding them. Trust me, read the material first and understand how it works. Your brain will then make sure it stays in your memory.

3. Using Mnemonics

You can use "Mnemonics" to remember short lists in order as so often, exams require you to do so.

For example, if you want to remember the colors of the rainbow, you can use the words "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain". Each of the first letter represents the colors of the rainbow.

You may have heard of this mnemonic for remembering the rainbow. However it amazes me how many people study for the exams but yet don't use mnemonics to remember lists. Even though they know of this technique. Periodic elements, presidents, etc can all be remembered this way.

Everyone can improve their memory - with practice, and techniques.

Whether it's for the long-term or short-term (for exams!), which the above steps would be able to help you. Improving your memory requires techniques as well exercises. With practice, you'll be amazed at how much your memory can improve.
