About The Body Mass Index
Your Body Mass Index is a fairly good indicator of general health. It compares your current weight with your height to see if you are within a healthy range. It's not perfect, but it's more more scientific than looking in the mirror and prodding all your bulges.
A high B.M.I. indicates that you are overweight, and a low B.M.I. indicates that you are underweight. Both can result in health issues in the longer term.
This Body Mass Index Calculator takes your height and weight, and gives you your B.M.I. It then suggests if you are underweight, a healthy weight or overweight - as well as suggesting what range is ideal for your height.
The B.M.I. is a very general indicator, and can prove an inaccurate guide in some situations. For example, those with a lot of muscle will often score overweight on the index, but are actually extremely healthy. Your weight is just one factor that makes up your general health, so you can't view it in isolation.
So, while you can't necessarily compare two people with the same height but different B.M.I. numbers and say one is healthier than the other, it can be more useful to track your own B.M.I. over time. If you notice it is drifting up or down, you may want to vary your diet or exercise levels. If there is no obvious reason why it is changing, you may have a new underlying medical condition that you don't know about and should speak to your doctor about.
In any case, before making any significant changes to your diet or lifestyle, you should consult a medical expert.
